First and foremost among the details is the fact that Spore Hero will be more of an action/adventure title than the sim-everything PC version.
Explaining the premise Lucy Bradshaw, general manager for Maxis, said to MTV Multiplayer, “Your planet that you’ve lived on has had a catastrophic event and you’re essentially plummeting to a new planet on the tail of a meteor. You arrive there and you start encountering new creatures. This is a new planet that you’ve got to make as your own. So you start in a series of quests and adventures in a kind of open world that you can take at your own pace. You start encountering other creatures and can interact with them in either combat or social [ways], but you can also do things on their behalf.”
Players will have access to a creature creation stage along the lines of that seen in the PC game. Once they've got their alien up and running (/crawling/wriggling/getting its arse or whatever passes for one in motion) they'll embark on quests that might, for example, involve evolving their own creature in ways that enable it to access previously unreachable areas of the world. Alternatively, they may need to help with the evolution of other creatures on the planet.
As for why the game is coming to the Wii rather than the PS3 or 360, Bradshaw nodded toward the controls. “It takes advantage of the controls explicitly. And even stylistically, when you see the game, you’ll go, ‘Oh yeah, that’s definitely a Nintendo Wii game’”, she said.
