Figures from the games sales tracker show that the handheld had the fourth best launch weekend for any games system in the UK. It came behind only the PS3, PSP and Wii. The DSi outdid even the original DS in its launch weekend.
“It’s difficult to know how many of these 92,000 consumers were new and how many had upgraded from their DS or DS Lite. But the next software chart will show the effect of those that have never before owned a DS. The DS market is primed for Easter, and we expect big numbers”, said Dorian Bloch, business group director for GfK Chart-Track.

Thankfully, I wasn't one of the 92,000 mugs. Phew.

So far though, I'm not that impressed. I already the original DS so this was just an upgrade for me but I can't say that its redifined my handheld experience. Camera and Sound effects editors are in the 'meh' category for me though I can see how children would enjoy using them.
DSiware is a mixed bag. The two 200 point games are games you could find elsewhere (Paper planes for example is a wario ware mini game). The 500 point games are okay but nothing that special. I downloaded warioware snap and artstyle:code - warioware was fun for 5 minutes but can't say I'll return often. Code is a good puzzler and the other artstyle game looked pretty decent but i ran out of free nintendo points (you get a 1000 for free when you first login).
Also downloaded the opera browser which works very nicely but it isn't really a substitute for a proper browsing experience. Nice try though!
The hardware itself isn't bad at all, the black matt finish feels a bit weird but build quality is top notch and the screen size and brightness is brilliant compared to the original DS.
I guess its rather like the ipod being updated, a couple more bells and whistles but not a required upgrade if you're happy with what you have.
