PWC report says so

2015 Until Digital Downloads Match Blu-ray
There could be a brief window of opportunity for Sony with Blu-ray and hence PS3 before digital delivery swamps the entire world forever. Well, the whole world that has better download speeds than say the Australian outback or the United Kingdom. A new report from respected financial analysts (yes, apparently they still exist), Price Waterhouse Coopers, called 'Global Entertainment and Media' 'proves' it.

You can buy the entire report here... for around U$900.

Videobusiness, which apparently has bought the report, states:

"(the report says that)...digital sales won’t come near that of Blu-ray in the next five years. This despite the fact that there are already more digital delivery devices in the home connected to the TV than Blu-ray players, thanks largely to the Xbox 360.

"Microsoft had sold an estimated 15 million Xbox 360 consoles in North America through 2008, and there are probably another million-plus TiVos, Roku Digital Media Players, AppleTVs and Vudu players capable of streaming HD content in homes."

It is true that HD video download speeds are increasing, but it will take several more years for legal download services to provide everything that is already contained in a Blu-Ray, like multiple sound formats, multiple languages and subtitles. Besides, most people like to have the physical product on the shelf. My reckoning is that both digital and physical worlds will exist side-by-side. Well, vinyl still lives despite CD and iTunes.

Until broadband speeds around the world seriously improve then its just not a feasable idea !! Here in the UK, broadband speeds vary from reasonable to downright pathetic. So downloading Full HD content is going to take ages. And also requires a considerable amount of storage space too.

If apple allow third party apps for appleTV and we got BBC iplayer and Hulu then it would be so differenent, of that I'm sure.
