"Mr Wada expected Nintendo to release a new Wii by 2011, with functionality more like that of Microsoft’s Xbox 360 or Sony’s PlayStation 3, and possibly a different controller", he told the FT.
This maybe news to Nintendo.

Why would Nintendo release a different controller? Unless he means the Classic Controller Pro or a WiiMote with WiiMotion+ built in...

Seems those whispers of Wii HD/or something else might be right. Not really surprising if Wii sales are dipping in a big way. Damn, so much hardware to store, I'm beggining to feel for game stores
If its not that, I think Nintendo might have taken a look at 360. We all know Nintendo have ben reluctant to get online for ages. What they might have noticed from MS and Live, is that a system can be robust and controlled without being donkey ass draconian. As a result of Live, fewer 360 games are pirated and with online play now an integral part of game. While Wii is courting the casuals, proper gamers have chosen other shores on 360 and PS3.

Nintendo simply has to introduce an HD Wii with better on-line features. 2011 seems as good a time as any, though 2010 would be better.
They don;t need to re-invent the Wii (see what I did there!?), just better GFX chipset, better CPU, and they're good to do.

Yeah, I think the major thing they need in it, is onboard memory, better yet a hard drive. They should work with SanDisk or someone, and get large memory cards shipping with the thing, if not an actual hard drive. 60gb-80gb should enough to keep people happy.
Whether thye'll have an online service that doesn't suck is another thing, but I think they at last realise that they have a lot of pleasing to do, despite being frst.

Nintendo could go the RF route, as developed by that company that was trying to flog their version to MS and Sony, as that allowed for greater position precision and did not suffer from the problem of having to be pointing at the IR bar to work.
