PS3 Motion Control for March 2010

Japan to get first bite

Posted by Staff
The chaps over at Gamezine have a leaked - and we presume confidential - transcription of meeting between SEGA and Sony on August 5th 2009.

That document not only indicates PS2 emulation in the PS3 again, but it also pins a date for Motion Control (still un-brand named) to see the consumer light of day. In terms of the former, "SCEA wants to sell all PS2 titles on PSN" says the document.

In the case of the release date for Motion Control, this will happen in "March 2010 in Japan. Bundles and pricing aren't mentioned".

Sony, of course, remains silent on product name, price and release date.

Kerching!

That exactly what I was expecting once BC was pulled from the PS3. It outright kills their nemesis, the pre-owned market, and opens up the gates to "money for old rope".

Is the BC function still buried somewhere in the PS3? I wouldn't be surprised at all if it is, and merely disabled at the disc read level.
That would makes the route to market for PS2 publishers a matter of repackaging the code for PSN - possibly just a custom PS2 disc image.

@config "Sell on PSN" doesn't mean can't "play from PS2 disc" aswell.

@DrkStr True, but I can't see disc media BC returning. After all, Sony pulled the BC for a reason. Dropping the hardware BC was to cut costs, but I can't see any reason to cut software emu other than to subsequently reintroduce it thru a back door - the most profit efficient channel they have; PSN.
