Telltale: Publishers Will Look To Digital Distribution

Tales of Monkey Island developer says Holiday titles are a hurdle for traditional publishers.

Telltale Games loves digital distribution, clearly. In speaking to GamesIndustry about the download platform and the consoles that support it, CEO Dan Connors said that episodic gaming has changed the state of play so much that loads of traditional publishers will soon jump on board.

“I think they all feel like they need to start making moves into digital. And I think there's certainly a need to try new things, and marketing departments are always looking for new ways to sell the games.” explained Connors, who also said that Telltale had been successful in the digital download business because it dedicated all resources to the online space from the start.

He continues, “Focusing on anything that takes energy away from [the traditional, Christmas AAA releases] is difficult for them. There are a lot of publishers out there looking for more cost effective ways to be in business using not just the big blockbuster model, and those are the partners that are going to be flexible.”

A vocal advocate of the digital distribution model, Telltale Games has made a lot of noise on the Nintendo WiiWare and PC services, offering an episodic spinoff to the Monkey Island series as well as a successful series of games involving HomeStar Runner's Strong Bad. In the interview, Connors praises Sony for its PSP Go platform too, but then any platform that focuses on the downloading of games is going to get that response, really.
