Sony Will Launch PS3 3D Update In June
Sony will release its first 3D TVs in Japan on the 10th June and overseas shortly after, along with an update for PlayStation 3 users to take advantage of 3D software.

The reason for acting in the Summer is so the company can get a lead on rival electronics company Samsung. Sony's first offering is to be a 46-inch model, selling at 350,000 yen (£2,605) and including two pairs of 3D glasses.

Reuters notes that the price is around 52 per cent more than its latest regular LCD with a similar size screen.

Hanwha Securities analyst, Alex Oh, said that Sony is a "formidable competitor" to Samsung because of its PlayStation business - he believes that gamers will be the first to adopt the 3D TV technology.

"In that sense, Sony, which is envisioning a comprehensive entertainment company, will take advantage of its game business, contents and movies," Oh said, "compared with Samsung and LG which remain focused on hardwares."

yes! very curious to see what content they will offer. To splash out such a money there shoud be very attractive 3D content. and i mean games and movies with it.

No. Why should it cost 50% more for a higher refresh rate, IR transmitter and some s**tty glasses?

Early adopter tax. Any new technology, regardless of how evolutionarily incremental it is, has a price premium to penalise those who wish to have "I had it first" bragging rights. If you don't want to pay the premium, the answer is simple... Just wait!

The TV over here (I'm in the US at present) is full of Samsung "first" 3D LCD TV ads. And I must admit, I was thinking, "What am I gonna watch on that?". The idea that I might get a whole bunch of quality PS3 3D titles is much more likely to open my purse strings. I'd still probably buy the Samsung screen though... They are simply better.
