Apple Announces Game Center For iPhone OS 4
Apple unveiled its upcoming iPhone OS 4 to the world last night, and with it came a new social gaming network called "Game Center." Available for iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad, the feature will bring standardised online gaming to the platform not unlike Microsoft's own Xbox Live.

While Apple did not go in-depth with the discussion of Game Center, it did reveal that the network would be structured from four significant pillars; Friend Invites, Matchmaking, Leaderboards and point-based Achievements. If implemented well, it's sure to be a positive shot in the arm to the iPhone platform's clout as a gaming device.

It is not known whether Apps will need to be modified in order to take advantage of the Game Center features, but it seems very likely. Beyond this, it seems that only the most modern iterations of iPhone and iPod Touch will be able to support all of the features of the new OS, which includes multitasking and dynamic advertisements for free Apps.

"iPhone OS 4 will work with iPhone 3G, iPhone 3GS, and the second- and third-generation iPod touch this summer, and with iPad in the fall," Apple announced at its event. "Not all features are compatible with all devices. For example, multitasking is available only with iPhone 3GS and the third-generation iPod touch (32GB and 64GB models from late 2009)."

iPhone OS 4 was released to developers last night, with a public release in the Summer. iPad users will get the upgrade this Autumn.
