Pachter: Can We Trust This Man's Analysis Ever Again?

The 'Wii HD' was the PS3 and Move the whole time. Huzzah!

Pachter: Can We Trust This Man's Analysis Ever Again?
Proving that he is but a mortal man, Wedbush Morgan analyst Michael Pachter has performed a stunning about-face when asked about his past predictions for a "Wii HD" in 2010.

Speaking with Critical Gamer, who asked him his opinion about the unlikelihood of Nintendo announcing such a product, the Pach replied with a corker, "There is a Wii HD in 2010, it’s just called PS3 with Move." Genius.

Why genuis? Well, despite Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime outright stating that Pachter is wrong, the analyst kept banging on about Wii HD.

Pachter added, "I suppose Nintendo can save the feature for their next generation console, but think that they are running the risk that Sony and Microsoft will capture the 'trade up' market by moving now with Move and Natal."

Not content with the volte-face, the analyst then placed computer game fanboyism on the same level as neighbourhood gangs, political party affiliations and religious beliefs. "I think the tribal declarations of allegiance are similar to individual affinity for neighbourhood, religion, political party, school, etc.

"This allegiance is no more than a statement that “I selected (fill in the blank) as my (console, school, religion, political party, neighborhood), and since I am a very wise person, I made an absolutely brilliant decision. If you don’t agree with me, then go f*** yourself."

We're not entirely sure if it's wise in itself to be relating computer games to religion, really. To hammer home the point, Pachter used a football analogy. "I disagree that it’s more rabidly fervent and widespread amongst gamers - you’re from the UK, tell me that there is anyone in Manchester who isn’t a Man U' fan."

Superbly researched analysis again unless you're a City fan? If you are, why not us a shout in the comments box below.

@ND Hopefully Nintendo will never bring out a Wii HD. The Wii is one of the worst consoles in the world. On our downstairs TV we have a Wii, PS2, and original XBox, and upstairs I have a 360. The only thing we ever use the Wii for is for recording stuff we've missed off iPlayer, and even that it's useless, waving that stick around trying to get the cursor where you want it. So infuriating that at times I'm tempted to just throw the stick at the console and have done with it. More often than not downstairs I much prefer the PS2, and upstairs it's the 360.

For reference, I had a Wii. Used it briefly, enjoyed briefly, then gave it to my godsons.

I game on my 360 and love it. I'm no MS fanboy, but they got it so right with this - all except the noise. I'd buy a new 360 today if it was silent.

But for goodness sake, people. The future is HD. Why wouldn't Nintendo make the next Wii HD? To cripple it deliberately? There's bound to be another Wii or whatever they will call it - perhaps the Poo?

Absolutely.

There is zero chance that the next Nintendo console will not be HD. But it will not necessarily be a Wii (or a Poo). They made a good call this gen by launching cheap, being innovative and avoiding HD - because most users did not have HD TVs. But things have moved on, SD looks crappy on many HD screens, and they will have to react to that. But they have much more R&D budget this time around than they did after the "failed" GameCube...
