2K Confirms 'Inferior' PS3 Version of Mafia II

No detailed grass, no large pools of blood.

2K officials have confirmed that the PlayStation 3 version of Mafia II will not be as graphically competent as those hitting the Xbox 360 and PC. The sobering news came after fans had raised concerns on the publisher's official forums about the fidelity of the PS3 demo.

Differences from other versions, as explained by 2K Elizabeth, include the following: "There will not be highly detailed grass or large pools of blood, the cloth movement is less noticeable than, for example, the PC version, and the visual fidelity in the demo is generally representative of what you'll see in the full game.

"When designing Mafia II, we optimized for each of the three different systems the game would run on to make sure the core experience was the best it could be. Because of this, there are some differences from one platform to the next," 2K Elizabeth continued. "Our aim is to make a cohesive and immersive experience and optimize the game for each platform so that it could run its best."

Certainly a kick in the nuts for players, especially with today's expectations of multi-platform titles performing equally across all formats. The announcement from 2K Elizabeth didn't please fans one little bit, with posts containing messages such as "ps3-owners got screwed ower [sic]" and "We shouldn't support devs who put out inferior versions on our console."

Mafia II is released next week, and is unlikely to see graphical fixes in time for its launch. Fans are asking for a future patch fixing the issues, but so far the company has yet to respond to the request.

Cut features... doesn't sound "optimised" to me ;)

I wouldn't call it being "screwed-over" however - at least they focused on making the game smooth/cohesive per platform. If graphics/technical details are the areas that suffer, that's a good thing, to be honest, rather than the alternative: choppy gameplay, low framerate, long load times, etc!

I was too busy with the awkwardness of L2 to aim to notice much of anything else.

Cutting graphical features from the PC version seems reasonable to me, given that nVidia and ATI have been rattling out new iterations of the GPUs every 3 months since PS3 and 360 appeared.
However, the suggestion of 360 having those PC features sounds more like a shovelware approach than hardware limitation.

It's a bit annoying because I was looking really forward to this game. Their goal is to immerse you in the mafia world. But no cloth movement, no grass and most annoying of all no blood. It's just stupid. It takes you out of the mafia experience shooting someone and no blood appearing on the floor. I bought a ps3 especially for this game and fifa 11 but this has really annoyed me. If the graphics are the same in the demo like in the real game with all those jagged edges everywhere, this has put me off this game. I wont be picking it up on the first day. Will be second hand complete then return second hand again.

If the games gets 90+% in the reviews then you know you will be getting it so its not an issues unless the games scores less than 90%
