A recently established hardware development outfit called Infinium Labs has unveiled the Phantom, a device it expects to revolutionise the way people around the world play videogames.

Looking like a ditched Xbox design concept, the Phantom is expected to be shown to the world at this year’s E3 in May. The Phantom will use a broadband network to enable net play of - wait for it - 32,679 retail game titles available and 418 shareware game titles, not including adult, casino, sequels and new releases in the past six months.

From what we can establish, the Phantom will make use of game discs designed for PC use, though this is yet to be confirm. Gossip hints at capabilities designed to run console discs, though this was not made specific on the firm’s site.

Interestingly, Infinium claims that its machine will outperform Xbox, PS2 and GameCube with its “always on broadband device.” Indeed, the Phantom is “so advanced, it exceeds the needs of hardcore gamers.”

Is this just a massive hoax? It must be, surely. We’ve written to those concerned and hope to receive a response by tomorrow. Check back then.
