Although any new Nintendo machine is certain to play host to the firm’s biggest franchises, it’s always nice to be reassured to that end. And reassured we have been, by Nintendo producer Eiji Aonuma, who has confirmed that a Zelda game for the Nintendo DS is already underway.

Speaking in an interview with GameSpy, when asked what Zelda goodness can be expected in the medium term, Aonuma-san said, “...we have a Game Boy Advance Zelda, a DS Zelda, and this GameCube one.”

Sounds like confirmation to us. We’ll bring you more details on Zelda DS as it becomes available.

Isn't this old pre E3 news? Come on Spong, you're slipping more than Slippy Toad on slime here.

Good news all the same though, like any DS game it should interesting to see how they implement it's features.

Oh hush. Just about every other gaming site reported this as well.

But it'll be interesting to see how they show the Zelda universe with two screens. Perhaps reserve the brilliant cell-shaded style to the pocket versions?

DS Zelda should be a straight hack-'n'-slash, with first-person view on the touch screen, where you move the sword with the stylus (also controlling power). The top screen could show stats such as health and combos.
