Activision has announced today that id and Nerve Software are working an expansion pack to the mighty Doom 3. Carrying the title “Resurrection of Evil” it does indeed promise to resurrect some evil. There’s no release date yet, but nor is there any particular rush: gamers will be wanting a little breathing space to get the standalone Doom 3 finished anyway.

As expected from an expansion pack, it will offer a raft of extra content: a new single player campaign, new multiplayer maps, new enemies and new weapons. CEO Todd Hollenshead says ROE will offer “a terrifying atmosphere, a new story and one of the most classic weapons ever, the double barrelled shotgun.”

Apart from the inclusion of the double barrelled shotgun, as popularised by farmers, posh country gents and Doom 2, no more specific information has been provided. However, Doom 3 fans are sure to welcome anything that adds further to what is already rather a good game.

Expect more details as they arise.

Not just that. In many respects and as good as Doom 3 is, I think id should be looking at creating newer content, even if this nostalgia horse can still trot. Next to Half Life 2, Halo 2 and other games like Farcry, Doom looks very out of place IMO.

Maybe, but bearing in mind the flurry of top-notch titles planned for the next few months (especially Half-Life 2), I wouldn't imagine many people clamouring for the expansion right now...

If you bought it close to its release date, played it through and still want more, then maybe you don't need the 'breathing space'... but I reckon most people will be happy to wait a while.

Anything using the same engine and suspense, but a bit more ambient light would be nice ;^D
