No PlayStation 3 until E3 – Official

Conference ends. Attendees 'slightly miffed'

No PlayStation 3 until E3 – Official
So Destination PlayStation in Miami has ended. And nothing whatsoever on PlaySation 3 was disclosed. Although not a massive surprise, attendees, all of whom were bound with promisingly tight non disclosure agreements, expressed disappointment en masse at the information blackout.

“It was hinted that we should attend to see 'something special'” one executive at a major US retailer told SPOnG today, “and everyone expected to see at least something [of PlayStation 3] over the three days. Like, videos or something... Anything... Even the most senior in attendance were kept in the dark.”

Sony, speaking to US site GameSpot, defended the decision to keep back PlayStation 3 media and info, saying, “DPS is actually over and we have made no new announcements concerning PS3". The rep continued "We never indicated that DPS was to be used as a forum to disclose new information or demonstrate PS3 content. DPS is designed as a forum to bring our retail and publishing partners together for new-year planning and this is the sixth conference we have hosted to do so."

So we'll have to wait until E3 – putting SCEI's promise of a spring launch well into the land of fantasy...

Sony obviously wants to counteract anything that Nintendo is going to show at E3. This is going to be a fearce battle and it looks like Sony is taking a leaf out of Nintendo's book of silence.
Sony must be more worried about Nintendo this time round and with good reason too, if Revolution manages to emulate the success of the DS then Sony are in for a shock.

Joy to the world! this E3 is going to be so explosive... second generation Xbox360 games and a full blown out Revolution and PS3 unveiling... bring it on!!

I'm geussing Sony is still redesigning it's controller or something to maxium counter Nintendo's remote which is getting more interest from well...everyone! by the minute.

Apart from the 'shot in the foot' guyWe are all saying / expecting the same thing: Sony is going to make sure they deliver one hellava gaming machine. Which they are.
We all know where microsofts roots lie - software! and this will always limit what Microsoft is capable of. They came too late into gaming hardware and only did so when they saw money in it - like they did with the internet.
And generally speaking Nintendo is the ideal route for 'rounded edge' gamers.
Deep down everybody knows that Sony cannot be beaten when it comes to designing and delivering unsurpassable Entertainment Hardware. Which is why any gamer worth his or her salt knows the PS3 is worth waiting for.

Seriously... the day that Sony doesn't build a faulty gamehardware is probably the 12th sign that begins the apocalypse (or whatever-ieth sign starts the apocalypse, i'm a bhudist!)

You seem to be forgetting that PS2 was easily surpassed by Xbox.

Yeah, about 3 years after its launch.

The PS2 has survived amazingly well.

The Apocalypso started a while back on a slow burn: climate change, rainforest devastation, lifestyles built around the persuit of pleasure that eats every resource the world has to offer and gives back s**t. Did this all start when the PS1 emerged? Who knows. I digress.
What I wanted to say was...a few dodgy consoles rolling off the production line dont count.
Sony are the bees knees when it comes to gaming and entertainment.

So you admit it was surpassed then. And so will PS3 be - we dont even know yet if it will actualy be as good as 360. We think that after an extra year and a half it should be, but its taking so long to come out it may be up against the next XBox shortly after its eventual release.

You may make comparisons to the last gen console war, but when it all boils down to it the only thing crossing over is backwards compatibility and brand name. Stats from the last 5 years have no bearing on this next set of consoles, release gaps, price, publicity, all effects how things will go. and its obviously going to change from this gen, to last.

Sony can create the best damn console ever, but if they deliver too late, too costly it WILL affect sales. The effect is still to be determined. If the sony brand name is stron enough, the PS3 will do well. Im willing to bet that most knowledgable people who cant afford to throw money around will choose a cheaper alternative. i dont care how nice the console is, no one is going to shell out 900 bux for a console in 3 years if the revo and x-box have been around for a while.

if i really want some stunning visuals, ill shell out the extra money and load up my computer with dual 7800 GTXs...

Given that many of the same internal teams (not limited to design and research, but also including marketing and other areas) that worked on the current gen consoles are now working on the next gen systems, it would be foolish to dismiss the past as having no relevance aside from brand names and backwards compatablity. Marketing for consoles starts well in advance of release dates (the Mountain Dew promotion in the states, and ourcolony.these hyped long before the 360 was released and it created a successful large demand for the 360).

stats from the last 5 years give a good indication of how marketing is going to work (note the increasingly teaser/viral nature of Microsofts last few major product marketing statergies: ilovebees for halo2, ourcolony for the 360 and origamiproject for the origami), pricing (I expect with increased stock and range of games pricing for the 360 will begin to tend towards the original xbox (e.g.£40 for a new games, dropping rapidly in price within 2/3 months) as developers begin to get more competitive. Although I believe the ps3 won't see this for at least 2 years given the (hinted at expense of development (making ultra shiny high def graphics for 2 tvs takes up a lot of development time - what were they thinking with that? I could understand if there was some kind of precedence for dual screen gaming on the pc, but there isn't given there's only about 4 games that support it))

You also assume that the ps3 will continue to retail at around $900 after launch (which i'm guessing is taken off that analysis of the ps3, the one where they can't add up the prices of the components and add an extra $100 onto production costs. it was very subjective and assumed (i'm using this word a lot today) that sony would be paying almost consumer prices for components it produced itself. Lots of little niggly problems with it. also no console company, aside from nintendo, has retailed systems at a profit. they expect to get that cash back with royalties from games), which would be a ludicrous price for a console. Especially after a few years given that every console launched so far has dropped its price every year to remain competitive. I'd have to use two bangs to signifiy what a crazy retail plan that is. The ps3 will be competitively priced - sony look to be gambling a lot on a market penetration rate equivilent to the ps2 (gamingsteve mentions that they look to be going heavily into their savings for funds for the next 3 years until they can begin to get money back from games.) whose biggest advantage was dvd capability and comparative cheapness.

Anyway, as sony have put it the next gen doesn't really start until the ps3 is here. here's hoping we actually see something at e3.
