Like the DS ninty have strayed from the norn... now look at it. The DS is a machine that some people hate and others couldn't be with out. electroplankton is one of the best concepts that has grace the videogame industry in years. And with this i think that The Big N has a trump card, something different you pick it up and are interacting with immediatly. that is nintendos real aim to forget about "how do i play this" and more into the "hey this is cool , oh i can do that!!!!! :D". Goldeneye on the n64 did the same with the analog input, pokemon was one of the biggest school yard games of all time with its trading, many of nintendos best pieces of software offer people i new way of interecting with there hardware. Nintendo arn't afarid to stray away from the norm and know about whats fun. So with this and very intruigued i am looking forward to playing and experiencing the revolution, its not going to be like playing GTA or streetfighter where a gamepad or arcade stick are a must, it'll be different and some people will hate it. The PSX and Xbox followers can play there endless reproducions of old software mechanisms and they will undoubtadly look wonderful but there not offering anything new (and don't say anything about Xbox live.... its so much better seeing the expression on your oponents face when you red shell them off the road!!!!!). Given time everyone will make up there own minds. i'll say this though don't knock it till ya tried it, you might not like it but there might be a real gem in there just like the DS and it might take you by suprise. Any how nuff of my rant. easy now ...... K+

I laughed when I saw this. "it's a remote control!! LOL"

and it is..

...and I like it.
I can see a lot of potential with this, certainly a lot more than with the ps3 'thingy'.

I imagine it's going to be a long hard slog for Nintendo to sell this idea to people, to third parties, to idiot gamers and to the media.
As long as they back this up showing the hardware with some software soon, and good software, building up to the next E3 then I think they should be ok.

I've read comparisons with the virtual boy today. This is no virtual boy, that was a half cooked idea lacking in the technology to make it work. Maybe if you remade it today it might work with proper screens and so on.
I don't think you can say the same about this controller. There's a lot of questions that they need to answer still about how it does this or that but overall I'm quietly impressed.

I applaud you for making such a bold move Nintendo.

The only thing Nintendo has to worry about is bad journalism, demonstrated brilliantly by whoever wrote this article. It took you several paragraphs just to get to the lead: what the controller does. You explain the concept poorly, and only after mocking it for a few paragraphs.

Only someone with a serious lack of imagination can understand how this controller works and still be disappointed. Sure, I saw a picture of the remote, and I wasn't happy. But then I actually read how about it worked (something you should do when reporting), and I don't think I could be more excited. It's essentially a 3D mouse - you can do anything with it! How can it possibly be a bad thing?

Back to bad journalism. Why didn't you mention the fact that developers' profit margins will shrink a great deal when making games for PS3 and Xbox 360? Developers make less with every generation, and have to put more work into it. Would you work harder for less money? They’re NOT happy about that, not to mention the ones that actually care about game play are probably getting bored of the same crap. PS3 and Xbox 360 aren't anything different than a Nintendo 64 – the games just look nicer. Big deal – you can't do anything new with them! How many times do we have to buy the same game just to see it with better graphics? How long will developers settle on remaking these same games just to let their artists improve the graphics?

I can't imagine a developer who understands the new controller concept who would settle on remaking the same games they've made for a decade, and would settle for making less money with each improved version because of development costs. Why would they continue doing such a thing when they can make truly new and innovative games AND make more money doing so?

Imagine having complete control of your sword in Zelda. Are you ever going to be able to go back and settle for pressing the A button? After trying out the Revolution (or whatever it is to be called) pressing A to swing your sword is going to feel pretty damn empty in comparison, not to mention very un-super-hero-esque. It would be like playing Mario 64 with a D-Pad (kind of like on the DS. Remember? It sucked).

Nintendo has made some really stupid moves lately, and I was not letting myself get my hopes up for this Revolution of theirs, but they've just changed the video game market forever.

And you won't have to wait and see to find out. Just read an article from an ACTUAL journalist who isn't an old gamer who's threatened by change. Then you'll get the real idea, and it'll be clear that Nintendo just won the Next-Gen wars. It doesn’t even matter if hardcore gamers don’t give it a shot, because the gaming community is about to get a lot bigger, just because of this “remote control”.

The only thing Revolution (probably) won’t have is super-realistic graphics. But Sony proved with the original Playstation that that’s not what matters to most developers or consumers. And must I really point out that the GBA has sold better than all of the current home consoles combined, even though the graphics by comparison are terrible?

If history has anything to do with predicting the future, Nintendo should be pretty happy right about now.

Take it easy,...THIS IS NOT Spong's USUAL WRITING! Got it! Don't know what exactly's goin on but this ISN'T THEIR normal post.

Can we now know...who wrote this garbage article or passed it over????????????!!!!

Anyway, i'm glad Nintendo proved its worth to many gamers today and actually can hardly find the words to say how much i'm pleased.
Oh, and all analysts analyzing game industry should analyze their anals istead, as i would very much agree with Bach saying, they're useless(don't mean to offend anyone but thats the case when it comes to games industry) and mostly unrelated to reality.

Do people normally reply to the first comment? I didn't think so.

I honestly can't see how many applications there are. Ok, you can wave it around like a sword and point it at the screen, what else? Erm..

Using only one hand (analogue attachment aside) isn't practical as the d-pad is further up than the a and b buttons so you can't respond as fast as normal. Light gun games have been around for ages, and it's not practical as a proper replacement to FPS'. Because, a) you cannot usually move as well as shoot randomly at the screen because unlike a mouse, you can't move the screen around by waving the remote about. and b) in split screen, it will literally be chaos.

People already think games are for kids and are pretty dumb, by giving someone a remote you're only fuelling that belief. I give Nintendo credit for trying something different, but they won't be able to get away with it, because a) it sucks and b) most people are just going to buy a play station any way.

You won't be playing FPS' with just the analogue wand, you'll be using the analogue add-on with it too. It's been thoroughly described in a lot of other websites already (*hint* try broadening your reading a bit more, about what you're commenting on first *hint*), you will use the analogue stick to do your movement (forwards, backwards, straffing left and right) whilst the wand will control the direction you look in. That will leave the B trigger to fire, the A button for actions, the two Z triggers on the analogue add-on could be used for jumping and crouching (maybe combined with the analogue stick for leaning/stealth movement instead). After all that you then have the D-pad for further functions, say using UP/DOWN for weapon selection and LEFT/RIGHT for item selection; you also then have the SELECT and START buttons, not quite sure how reachable they are yet, the comfort of their positioning will come with hands-on use.

Are you still sure that this will not be the new way to play FPS games? It seems a lot more intuitive than mouse/keyboard combos.

I will split my comments on this matter into two sections:

Section 1:
Nintendo clearly has done what it has to in order to put itself in a position it wants to be in. Many analyists have spoken about how Nintendo has finally officially seperated itself from Sony and Microsoft as a profitable, 10-15% marketshare contender. While this may be true, I honestly believe that Nintendo has actually taken a step into becoming an even bigger player in the market than it did with the Gamecube.

The response to the controller, despite Spong's outlook, has been incredibly positive. If it hasn't been mentioned already, it's worth stating that Hideo Kojima of Konami fame has given only the highest of remarks towards the controller, as well as other big name developers such as Ubisoft and THQ. Furthermore, the fan reaction, for the most part, has been surprisingly accepting, albeit slightly hesistant. The reason why is because this is a brilliant design. It does everything the PS3 and 360 controllers can do (with the controller mold taken into account), as well as more than either of the other two controllers could do combined. The design is brilliant, and this really will be the ultimate opening for games to finally come out of the sequel slump they have been in for the last five to ten years.

Section 2:

OMG nintedoez gay wtf??/

ok, i have been reading a lot of nonsense comments on the revolution controller, and i just wanted to say a couple of things....
first, you guys have NO idea how this works, so you are not on a position to say its bad, or that this will make the revolution the last nintendo console...
Its like someone saying somethng bad about a person they dont even know yet...
In my opinion, when i see the new PS3 or the new XBOX360 i see better graphics yes, but not a next generation... nothing has changed, the games will be the same, they will be good as always i am sure, but it will be more of the same.
But when i see what nintendo is trying to do, well that is defenetly different, that is next generation.
I have a PS2 and XBOX in my living-room, i didnt get a PSP because its just more of the same, i dont want to have the same games i have home in my portable, so i got the DS, and i am really happy, there isnt really any games i like on PSP that i cant play on my PS2...
I was looking foward on getting a PS3 next year, but now i am really looking foward for the REVOLUTION, with its new control system... cant wait to try it...
a simple control that tracks your movement in 3D guys, this is not a light gun that you shoot to the screen... it works nothing close to that. It will be like having a virtual 3D mouse in your hand... I think its great.

i agree with you to the fullest!

innovation? innovation my ass, the system and controller look like {no disrespect} it was made for handicap people.

another dissapointment, another 3rd place lost, and finally, nintendo is going bankrupt because with a selective few buying this piece of s**t

R.I.P Nintendo, it was a very nice years in the early 90's, now it's over forever.

OK, people are just ignoring something here...
Have you guys read what this new controller does? have you guys imagined what you could do with it? what the developers can do with something like this?
Please read what it can do first, it doesnt matter if nintendo has done it, it would be as cool if sony or microsoft had done it!
If after reading what this can do u are not ecxited or at least interested in knowing how this will work... you have a problem...

It's a remote control, just like what I was considering (but rejected) for my gaming console, what a laugh. Those kids are going to get exercise at least. But, when you think about it, if you lay your arms on to arm wrests it won't be such an effort, so maybe it will be revolutionary.

How revolutionary is it? Well in the early 80's I bought a game stick that used a mercury switch to tell which way it leaned. Light guns do 2D positioning, and there are various existing 2D/3D positioning technologies (there was a head mounted ultrasonic mouse in the 80's and a gaming one in the 90's that used sensors around the screen) things since the 80's, and segways etc use motion sensors. All can be used to same effect. I have also considered game controller designs using these things. So except being all on the one controller, not very revolutionary.

Now how many people do we expect to see at gaming tournaments with Revolutionary controller adaptors and drivers to use these on the PC?

Ok, give me a good list that has more than 'swords and light guns'.

Chances are when I get to play it (and I do intend to give it a shot) I'll be a total convert, but I can't see it working. How the hell can it work in an FPS when you need to turn 180, do you point the remote around at your face?
