Eidos Confirms June 2005 Release for New Look Tomb Raider
A recent press release from Top Cow Productions, creators of the Tomb Raider comic, has stimulated all sorts of chatter about the possibilities for the seventh game in the series. The statement indicated a summer re-launch for the comic, in order to coincide with Tomb Raider VII’s proposed release date. Despite reports filtering back from Eidos America, apparently refusing to confirm this approximate schedule for the new game, this is indeed the case.

Eidos UK announced back in March that Tomb Raider VII was due for a June 2005 release, and have reiterated this today. Unfortunately, the publishers aren’t providing any more details at this stage.

It is thought that Lara Croft will be enjoying a makeover prior to her return, with Top Cow President Matt Hawkins saying "[we] realised [Eidos] were changing Lara Croft up quite a bit", as reason for closing the current comic chapters in January. So when the new comic and game are released next June, fans should expect some sort of new look. Quite what this is will remain to be seen.

As soon as any further Tomb Raider news is revealed, read it here.

Tomb Raider bashing always seems to be a popular pastime, but I for one loved the earlier TR games, especially the first one. With a new developer taking over the production I'm looking forward to seeing what they come up with, it surely can't be any worse than Angel of Darkness was. I guarantee there'll be more than a little Sands of Time influence in it though, which is no bad thing, there would never have been a Tomb Raider without Prince of Persia anyway.

The earlier tomb raiders were great but the newer ones are really really poor i cant stand them i think they should just give up with them in my opinion and start something new.

I think there was plenty of potential for Lara Croft as a character, before Angel of Darkness there was talk of dropping the Tomb Raider name, which I think they should have done. There could have been many other styles of game, or different genres even, all starring Lara Croft. That's what they should have been done from the start really to save the character from what has now happened, she's become a tired and overexposed icon, she's a C-list cyber celeb.

I agree, the films didn't do too much to help either.

The original Tomb Raider was a great game, I loved it, played it to death, went back and played it again to get all the secrets, etc, etc.

The second was a dissapointment, not enough had changed, sure you could climb, there were boats and a skidoo, but where was the story? Honestly, what was my motivation for the whole Great Wall of China bit? Also, the first level was suprisingly random in it's traps.

The third, I didn't even finish, I haven't played another seriously until AoD, which I enjoyed, but it wasn't long enough and I hated, hated, hated the changes in the control method.

The problem, I think with TR is that in TR2, Lara was turned into a James Bond/Mission Impossible type operative, fighting against people. In TR1, the emphasis was much more on the Indiana Jones style defeating the traps type play, with a few animals and people thrown in for kicks.

I too am tired of Tomb Raider. I bought the first one on PSone when it was at it's best. I didn't buy TR2 but played a friends copy and things were diverting from tombs by then.

The last TR I picked up was a dirt cheap DC Chronicles copy in a bargain bin, and I haven't purchased another since. I am tired of her, her face and her silly accent etc. Perhaps she has been a victim of her own success, over exposed by Sony and Eidos.

In my opinion the series needs more new characters to play with because she is boring. She also has no kind of character movement that makes me wanna continue playing it. Look at Gabe from Syphon Filter, though a 989/Sony game that in my opinion is how a character should move. Running while firing in another direction etc, Lara needs more moves, and a little less reliance on guns. The storyline also has to be better too than the last few.

I'll keep an eye on it's progress, and maybe C.D can prove me wrong.

If anyone can breathe life into the jelly mold, crystal Dynamics should be able to. When they created Soul Reaver I thought "this is where the TR engine should be going, not that hideous block-based level design". Out popped the next TR and... yawn.

I've bought every single TR - I'm something of a die hard fan - and I've been disappointed after the initial game. The issue for me has been the lack of focus on the story. That's what made the first one so enthrawling, IMO.

AoD was a huge disappointment, but I think we can lay the blame right at the feet of Eidos shareholders. Instead of taking comfort from the fact that the title would excel given just a little more time (according to one disgruntled exployee, Core promised the game by Q4 2003 - Eidos demanded it before end of Q2), the demand was so great for the title to be done by fiscal year end, it was published despite needing truly completing.

Staying with the shareholders, they used AoD's poor receiption as a stick with which to beat Eidos. Earlier this year Eidos made the decision to give Shellshock a little more time. What do those shareholders do? Well, just look at the share prices.

What do shareholders want? Crap dividends now, or greater down the line when titles have been honed and fully matured. Clearly the latter. Shortsighted fools.
