It Begins. First Non-Game Titles for Nintendo DS

Suite of software shown for Japan – E3 expected to see full roll-out.

Posted by Staff
SPOnG believes that a new Game Boy Advance will be shown at E3. What’s more, the role of the DS, we have been led to believe, will evolve into a gaming machine that offers more than just gaming.

This case has been lent some weight by Nintendo of Japan this morning, as the first generation of non-gaming software has been revealed by the Kyoto videogame giant.

In what could be interpreted as a selection of yuppie toys and accessories, Nintendo has shown a mental workout application featuring mathematical and linguistic problems, a logic-driven selection of puzzles and perhaps most tellingly of all, a complete electronic dictionary for the DS.

It might be worth taking note that although two of the titles sound as though they could well be a game of sorts, the layout and general aesthetic of them is very sober. They are presented as functional pieces of electronica, not entertainment software.

This could be the life-changing paradigm-shifting thirst-quenching good-buzzing cool-talking high-walking fast-living ever-giving cool-fizzing event I've been waiting for!

No more will those dull meetings revolve around an unspoken drama of business card one-upmanship and PDA snobbery. I'll rule the roost with my huge great clunky, plastic PDA-lite. None of their iPaqs and Cliés can play Metroid Prime Hunters.

What'd be really cool is "Where in the World Am I?" coupled with a wiredless GPS device thingy, so that you could tell where you wake up after a particularly adventurous stag night.

You'd take your DS with you on a stag night??

Well I guess you would if it had a wiredless GPS device thingy ! ;)

Not the first non-game titles. Mario's Time Machine and Mario is Missing? could hardly be described as games.

I didn't realize they had already ported those gems to the "DS". I need to watch those release scheduels more closely!

Awsome
When Nintendo asked to people what do we want to do with the DS, i think everybody request for the PDA function, I did of course at that time, , and we asked for MP3 music function, Internet browser, FM radio, Wi-Fi capability, Chat with our own voice,
Nintendo learnd the lesson and is giving us what we want, then Ill pay for it

Oh, come on. I'm a big hater of corporates (even though I work for one... or maybe because of that) but you can't blame a company for resenting paying someone to browse the 'net all day.

I've never head of Michael Foods though... let me do some Googling.

Boy, their web site sux.

Oh yeah, I know "Better n'Eggs" (which isn't) and "Simply Potatoes" (which isn't better than potatoes either). I think I've seen Crystal Farm's Synth-ched too.

You don't spit (or worse) in this stuff do you Lupos?

can you blame a company that has a severly over qualified employee locked into a crappy job because they dont want to pay him more money. What about if that person is capable of completeing all of his duties in half the time people with the same job take. An what if that person got all his work done on time and effeiciently and done well and still had time to go online because i need to be here for a certain time frame... then could we blame them?

just a little?

thats right kids, stay in school, get those degrees, it really does matter! 5 symesters at a rediculouslyt expensive art school that i coudlnt afford to keep going too and now i can even get a job in the acounting department cause i dont have the 4 year... hurray!

no, im an inventory Analyst... i just sit at a desk all day, hence the to much time online... and rest assured we have an incredibly stricked QC department, so "no spit gets through to you!" (that should be our company moto!)

they could at least let me make the web site... the IT staff around here sucks rocks

Amen to that brother.

I think it's only a matter of time before we see Mario Paint 2 on DS or something similar.

I did hear about a translation puzzle game that's due in Japan for the DS which translates english, japanese and chinese. Using the touch screen you can draw the correct text need and the DS helps you out etc. Hopefully we will see this in u.k/e.u too.

Great stuff.
