Summary

The first Winter Olympics of the 21st century are being held in Salt Lake City, Utah. You’ve got three choices, you can go, watch them on TV, or be a virtual athlete in Salt Lake 2002 on PS2.

Developed by ATD, who did the excellent Rollcage on the PlayStation, Salt Lake 2002 features six authentic Olympic events. Combining state of the art graphics with TV-style presentation, Salt Lake 2002 deserves your attention.

The events on offer include Men’s Alpine Downhill Skiing, Women’s Alpine Slalom Skiing, Two-man Bobsleigh, Women’s Freestyle Skiing Aerials, Men’s Ski Jumping K120 Individual and Men’s Snowboard Parallel Giant Slalom.

Men’s Alpine Skiing is a fast and exciting sport where the competition is the fiercest in the world, this being Olympic standard after all. Try to find the delicate balance between the line of least resistance and maximum speed. It's easier than it sounds. Women’s Slalom is similar but with the addition of gates that must be negotiated correctly to avoid time penalties.

Two-man Bobsleigh is another fast and fun sport. Salt Lake 2002 does a commendable job of trying to faithfully recreate this event. The speed and thrills of racing down an ice tunnel, ducking and diving and trying to beat the impossibly fast first place.

Women’s Skiing Aerials lets players unleash their imagination and try to perform the most impressive and technical stunts they can manage. Points are awarded for difficulty, style, and landing.

Men’s Ski Jumping is a distance competition and the Men’s Snowboard Slalom has the added of bonus of supporting two-player split screen action.

The official licence makes this a truly authentic title, with real life competitors and accurately modelled environments. Play this game with a friend, try to beat each others times and see just how much playability this title possesses.
