EXCLUSIVE! Lara's roots are going back to her

Tomb Raider's old Gard back on board

Word on the grapevine is that Toby Gard is about to move to the United States to take a role at Crystal Dynamics on the forthcoming Tomb Raider game.

Gard, who was creator of the Lara Croft character, and progenitor of the Tomb Raider franchise left Core Design in 1997 to form Confounding Factor, and work on the poorly received Xbox exclusive title, 'Galleon'.

Fans of the Tomb Raider series, which has maintained impressive sales despite increasing criticism of the games themselves, will be ecstatic to hear of Gard return. But whether he can give TRVII the magic that made the original title one of the most important games of all time remains to be seen.

This is great news!

I always thought the first game was the best for story and exploring and puzzles. Later the games made Lara kill more humans, which took away the tomb raiding aspect of the game.

Now I am looking forward to the next TR game again!

Dude, this like totally r0x!

I spent almost as long thumbing my joystick over the first TR game as I did thumbing my joystick over the first Pam Anderson Playboy spread. TG going back to TR is almost as good as Pam putting a nudie shot in her new book.

In fact, the best thing EVER would be a hack for TR that skinned Lara as a nude Pamela Anderson. Anyone out there with the skills, I've got the back issues of Playboy!!!

Good news. Lets hope he can help bring the series back to it's roots and out of bargain bins. The first game is still the best in my opinion.

Perhaps what is needed is a name change too, since she's not in tombs that much anymore. Some new playable characters would also go down well, kind of tired of Lara and her big chest.

Well, let's not get carried away. It's off the "grapevine", so its still in rumour pase ATM.

Personally, though, I'm not sure it's such a great thing. I find it hard to believe that Gard single-handed made TR the success it was. Plus, he clearly doesn't possess the magic "great game" potion, going on Galleon's less than stellar reception.

Of course, it might not be a bad thing, either. Time'll tell.

That isn't Gard's Lara he's pictured with. That the bastard spawn of a million sequels, in an Avril Lavigne stylee.

Are you saying Avril is the bastard spawn of superior antecedants, or that she herself has spawned a thousand inferior imitators?

SPOnG grapevine is pretty reliable, despite all the fan boys dissing it!

Now gamesindustry.baz and computer and video games have both run with the same story...
