Iwata this year in Europe
Iwata this year in Europe
SPOnG can finally confirm the date by which the world will be relieved of the constant burden of wondering about what Nintendo’s Revolution controller actually is.

You’ll be pleased to know that a full explanation of Revolution will be made by Nintendo president Satoru Iwata during his Tokyo Game Show keynote address. This news represents completely finalised Nintendo plans – Iwata will fully outline The Secret on 16th September 2005.

Nintendo is assembling key media to attend this year’s show, due to take place between 16th – 18th September 2005. Iwata will make his presentation of current activities at Nintendo. He will outline current projects and will then - unveil the Revolution in all its glory.

The Revolution presentation will include an explicit outline of the hardware and its controller and input mechanic, as well as illustrate exactly how it will work. It will go on to show games running on the system and how they make use of the technology.

Mario 128, or ‘New Mario’ as it is dubbed internally at Nintendo, is expected to be the star of the show.

SPOnG has a record of perfectly outlining what Iwata’s keynote addresses will entail. And we can tell you with 100% certainty that in the next three and a bit weeks, we’ll all be looking at Nintendo Revolution controller hardware and accompanying games. Exciting times indeed.

We’ll bring you updates as they break, as well as Tokyo Game Show coverage direct from the show floor. Let us know what you think, and drop any questions for SPOnG’s editorial staff in the forum below.

i no its nit picky, and usualy iwouldn't have bothered... but you said it twice... megaman is a capcom game... not nintendo. an understandable error to be sure... but none the less incorrect.

as for the 11 year old thing, i am a ripe old 25 now (oh its sux) and i just purchased a DS and still play mario kart fairly frequentley. i love the cube. i cant wait for zelda. its goign to be fantastic. infact the more realistic zelda and the metroid games are good examples of how nintendo is working to "cool" themselves a little bit. look at the movie bis. LotR is liek the biggest movie ever and its pg-13... why? orc blood doesnt count! smash em till your hearts content. Zelda can do the same thing. Did you ever once thing that LotR was being Kiddied up wehn you watched it? if i want a game where chick ride bike topless ill ask aclaim... if i want a terible ill concieved poorly controlling excuse to kill inocent people ill call rockstar. if i want a game that delivers a compellign story, endearign characters and tight inovative game play, nintendo never lets you down.
Don't be fooled, just cause a game carries the "E" doesnt mean it stars mary kate and ashley olsen and a pony... all though a game with an A and the same stars would be site! but i digress.

and its tired i relaize but there is the whle resident evil series... which nintendo exlucified for a ratehr hefty sum im sure. And now the cube faithfull have what will most liekly be this years game fo the year. and no 100+ million combined ps2's and xbox's will change that.

and in closing... do we really want an adult mario? hed probably end up with a Gat liek shadow the hedgehog... japanese developers should leave the uber violence to the americans... its what we are good at.

He'll probably just bring Will Wright onstage to play Pacman or something.

Y'know what, that post wasn't supposed to be a reply directed at you. It was just a random post. I only noticed after I had posted it, sorry dude.

I agree that Nintendo are very reluctant to tread the mature games line and I too wish they at least try to do something to cover those who don' want to play more mature stuff. I reckon a Mach Rider game update could cover such an attempt but I know they can do more.

Nintendo will learn in time that they can't always rely on third parties to cover angles like beat em ups, I ean even a fighting game based on kick boxing or something would be good. I refuse to believe SBM is the best they can do in this area (a 3D/2D viewed fighter).

For if the second and third parties don't bite their lure Rev could turn out like the GC, while 360 and PS3 leap ahead. I saw how Nintendo let support for GC slide when developers jumped ship and while I admire them for trucking on down the road, I saw Nintendo do little to fight and keep those leaving onboard. I hope they fix this weakness this time round.

I agree with your sentiments on the whole kiddy/mature game thing. I've spent as much time playing Pikmin as I have God of War.

However, I had to challenge you on your LotR point.

Elves don't surf sheilds or Mumakil trunks!

Dwarves are not comic relief!

If extreme sports and lowbrow humour aren't kiddying things up, I don't know what what is.

im a big nintendo fan and have bought nearly every console since the snes.i will be getting a revolution but can anybody actually see the revo doing that well, cosidering it will be launched 6months->1year after 360.

Well with PS3 also launching late Rev is still in with a chance. This is by no means a forgone conclusion because Sony are dominant in this home arena already. Things are always changing and if Nintendo offer something different enough to what Sony and MS are we'll see them staking their own claim much harder this time.

Nintendo have a lot to loose but not putting up a good fight in this vital home arena like they have done previously. If they fail this time it could hurt them bad and push them out of home consoles altogether, and I for one (like many other gamers) don't want that.

We've seen what Nintendo can do against the odds with the DS, if they apply the same principles (yes I know some are different for hand helds) and attitude to the Rev they could claw back some vital ground and help take the cheddar out of gaming that Sony's previous cream has turned into.

I'm definitely not underestimating Nintendo to bounce back, especially after Sega's surprise exit from the console market.

Nintendo must evolve as a developer and learn to adapt to their customers needs more. We'll see all their cards soon.

Also I'm wondering what Sony are gonna do with their controller for PS3? It's gone quiet on that front.

Sony? They're just playing the "wait untill nintendo shows their controller and then copy it without the risk of being sued afterwards" game i geuss.

Like everyone else has been doing for the last 20 years...so what's new.

Engadget did it - Everyone else in the world of Internet journalism - just copied. Thig is, look at the piece. It links out to our news about the Iwata keynote at GDC. We ran that weeks before and it was 100% on the money. It wouldn't be hard to look at the site and think, SPOnG interviews Iwata, it has 100% information on what is GDC keynote will entail and now claims this - Perhaps they're right...

The only big moan about SPOnG reliablity comes from Xbox Resident Evil 4. I was shown marketing literature by a first-party that specificaly mentioned the Xbox SKU several times. If it was pulled for any reason, that's life.

You think that's the ONLY time SPOnG has been wrong?

Come on. Do you forget when SPOnG claimed that they knew, "for a fact", that there would be a GameBoy Evolution at GDC or E3? We never got one.

SPOnG claimed Metroid Prime Hunters would feature 'Halo-style deathmatches' and all kinds of game modes you guys listed. Yes, Nintendo has NOW announced its only, but they only achieved this by bumping back the date; meaning that, for the original launch date, at the time SPOnG posted the article, Metroid Prime Hunters was NOT going to be online.

SPOnG's track record has a lot of holes in it. I read it anyway, but I don't try to pretend it is always right.

I'm half expecting to be disappointed by this controller. It's almost as if I need to keep repeating the word "MEGATON....MEGATON" over and over again.
Anyway, I don't care so much what this controller looks like, I'm more interestd in what are they going to do with it. I thinl the Gamecude controller was very underexploited by nintendo. (a fact that they even admitted ina recent interview) They never made much use out of the double click shoulder buttons and for a change it was third party companies that pushed the console and it's hardware more than nintendo themselves.

I think Nintendo need to use the same strategy for Revo as they are for the DS in order for it to be really successful. It's no surprise that the DS sells so well in Japan considering the amount of software it has.

Several people on this post are calling for more mature games too and yeah they are totally right. But I personally don't want to see Nintendo make some GTA knock off clone thingy. I don't want to see them try to make games that are trying too hard to be COOL. they don't need to.

Mature games are not about blood, violence and swearing. I find all the games that are supposed to appeal to older gamers or a more mature audience eith incredibly dull or fantastically insulting to me.
Honestly the most mature game I played recently was Another Code for the DS. The way the puzzles work and the themes of the story and the way it doesn't talk down to the player or gloss over bits of the storyline that might be a bit disturbing.
I hope for more of that sort of thing clever, well made and with a wide appeal and nintendo need to have a lot of that this time around, they need to cover all bases and grow the older market and the female market but still hold onto what they've always done or else they'll find themselves becoming a bit part player chasing a little niche whilst MS and Sony take the lead in the console race.

Thank you.

Spong likes to kind of.. lie, a lot. They show things as facts and when they are right, it is (most of the time) a "well duh" situation.

Thing is, most people think that mature games mean violent games. When really, violent games are quite childish.

Don't forget boring...very boring.
I think Nintendo is speeding up the making of mature games though. Reggie told in a interview they we're making contacts with a lot of teams to make games (new mature IP's as he called it) for the Revolution.

Also Nintendo is letting it eye fall on Europe and has assigned someone to talk with developers and publishers, even suggesting buy-outs.(i'm betting on Kuju)

I'm thinking that Nintendo will try to copy its GBA/DS model where it contacts a new and/or small developer to make a game for the Revolution and Nintendo will publish/finance it (everyone probably noticed that quite a lot of DS-games published by Nintendo are made by some unknown team).
Nintendo has been suggesting a lot that the Revolution would be ideal for small/medium developers with big ideas. It slowly comes togheter.

And MEGATON is not Nintendo's fault, it was a rumor gone out of control (thank you IGN) and somehow nintendo gets the shaft... that's just hypocrite.

You really need to re-read the Game Boy piece. We knew there would be a new Game Boy at E3. We were the only people to know and report on this - As we said all along, we didn't know what - everything else was speculation. Read the pieces.

MPH? What are you talking about? The game was the flagship online title...

Read again. SPOnG never, ever asserted that Nintendo would ever release a "GameBoy Evolution". In fact, SPOnG has never uttered that term in any news article. I've just checked.

SPOnG wrote that a "new model" of GameBoy Advance, a "Game Boy Advance 2" as we put it, would be at E3.

I think you're demonstrating perfectly what somebody else brought up in this thread; the propensity for forum dwellers to read other poster's ramblings and assume they were the very words written by a publication.

Ha! So let me get this straight; you're saying that SPOnG ran a story about MPH featuring full on-line play, and now that Nintendo have announced this, using it as an excuse for delay, SPOnG is responsible for fabricating the whole thing?

For fsck's sake!

You cannot take the words of a PR drone as being entirely true. Example. Which of the following sounds more encouraging to you;

1. Metroid Prime Hunters has been delayed because we're behind on the development schedule.

2. Metroid Prime Hunters has been delayed so we can add full on-line play functions.

Grant Turismo 4 was delayed in order for Polyphony to complete the on-line play, and that game was release, after further delay, without it!

SPOnG's track record has a lot of holes in it. I read it anyway, but I don't try to pretend it is always right.

I don't deny it. We have holes, but they're old ones from our early editorial days, and we're doing our utmost to fix them. Unfortunately, we cannot aim to break stories built on insider info and have the actual events match up 100%, all of the time. However, we categorically DO NOT fabricate stories, as put about by those who'd like to see the back of SPOnG.

Has been announced by Nintendo today in Europe.
Offering that piece as us being wrong is utterly astonishing. It's, you know, us being 100% correct.
