An alarming video released by NeoFlash today illustrates the level of piracy facing the PSP, with the system seemingly about to be shredded with the release of a new product.
A video demonstration
available here (since removed) showed the PSP hooked up to a prototype device enabling the operator to use Compact Flash, Multi Media Card and SD cards to host, and then play UMD movies and games.
The creators report that:
Brimming full of confidence from the DS scene, Neoflash will be entering the PSP market with an innovative Memory stick converter device. This product will allow you to use SD/MMC/CF cards of up to 32 GB in size on your PSP! It supports a whole range of formats including MP4, MP3, Emulators and whatever else you should throw on it. The actual board is very small, despite how it looks in the following picture - however rest assured NeoFlash will be adding a clip on plastic case housing for the board which means you can use your SD/MMC/CF cards comfortably on the move without the need for expensive and low capacity duo PRO memory sticks!
Watching the movie was quite interesting. It feels like a movie made by a serial killer or hostage taker and screams illegality.
Of course, SCEI is aiming to tackle piracy, upgrading its firmware at an impressive rate, though this device will surely rattle the cage of anyone at the firm. It’s the final insult for Sony, as it used to be able to console itself with the fact that any PSP usage it wasn’t monetising was at least being streamed from an expensive SMSPD…
