Guitar Hero II: Whammy Bar Fixed, Your Xbox Jiggered

The day the music died

Red Octane may have thrown owners of Guitar Hero II out of the frying pan and into the fire with its recent 360 patch.

Numerous gamers are reporting in forums that the patch is causing their copy of Guitar Hero II to freeze up or, worse still, giving them the red ring of death on their console's power button. Several gamers have reported having to return their consoles to Microsoft for repair or replacement.

SPOnG contacted the game's publisher, Activision, to find out what's being done to resolve the issue. No comment was available at the time of press.

The patch was issued on Saturday to resolve the failure of the game to respond to input from the controller's whammy bar in certain instances.

Guitar Hero II seems to be providing Red Octane, Activision and Microsoft with a constant headache lately. First came former franchise developer Harmonix's announcement of Rock Band, prompting cries of doom for the series. Next up were the afore-mentioned whammy bar troubles, rendering the guitar controller's functionality stunted. Then came the outrage prompted by the pricing of downloadable song packs. Now, finally, the game is turning 360s into extremely expensive doorstops.

Has Guitar Hero II turned your 360 into a brick? Let us know in the Forum.

OK, this is ridiculous.

I haven't played GH2 since the middle of last week so don't have the patch. Hopefully it's not a mandatory one. I'm not risking it to be honest.

My Xplorer suffered from the broken whammy, I couldn't complete the whammy part of the tutorial, but didn't realise it was because of a hardware fault. Then I saw on Spong that some were DOA.

I followed the instructions here:

Scroll down a bit until you see the better pictures. This worked perfectly for me, your mileage may vary. I am now very wary that I won't be able to play until they release a non-360-buggering patch.

I updated and have played some 10+ hours after it with no issues. I'm guessing it will only happen to some systems.

I haven't had much of a problem to begin with. My Whammy originally did work and then i could only use it if i pushed it back a bit and then pushed it in. When the patch came out, i now have no problem at all.

(Oh and by the way my 360 did break but this was before the patch came out. I was having intermittent problems with my 360 and it just overheated and i could eventually not turn it back on again. No point in getting Microsoft to pick it up as 2 of my works mates had to send theirs back a while ago and it took 3 months for each of them as they did not know where Guernsey, Channel Islands is. Ridiculous. I am using my mates 360 as he's never in to play it.)
